Rob Hewlett is originally from Benton, Louisiana. He knew from a young age that he was destined for the veterinary field from his experiences helping his father who also is a veterinarian. He grew up on Holly Hill Farm building fences, barns and cross country jumps for the working equestrian center, home to about 150 horses. His mother and two sisters are all competitive eventers.
After completing high school he moved to south Louisiana to attend Louisiana State University where he studied animal science and agriculture business. He then decided to travel to Western Australia to continue his studies at Murdoch University, finishing veterinary school in December 2009.
Rob enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine but has special interest in anything equine related and small animal surgery.
He spends most of his day in equine practice, diagnosing and treating lameness, routine dentals and drenches, treating colics, illnesses and managing wounds, providing fresh and frozen artificial insemination service in the breeding season.
His interest in orthopedics lead him to take a course in managing canine stifle injuries, which allows Swans Vet to offer the TTO procedure which in the past is only offered by specialists in referral practices. The distance from referral practices allows him to sharpen his skills in orthopedic fracture repair.
Rob breeds thoroughbreds for racing on his property, in his off time he likes to be outdoors enjoying the beaches; surfing, 4-wheel driving, camping, fishing and everything that Esperance has to offer.
